Chapter Seven...

Despite how tired she was, Penelope felt she needed to spend some time with Gram. As soon as Riley picked her up she asked him to bring her there. They found Gram in the kitchen and Emily in the living room with Tim. Penelope smiled as she caught the way they were looking at each other. She imagined it was probably the same way she looked at Riley.

Penelope went up to her room and got changed into clothes that didn’t smell like the kitchen she’d spent all morning in. Then she gathered some clothes to throw into the washing machine, straightening her room up a bit. She’d barely stayed in it the past week and found it was messier than usual, with things strewn about in her haste to grab overnight bags. Satisfied with her clean room, Penelope headed down to the laundry room next to the kitchen.

“Oh, Penelope,” her grandmother called to her, “I almost forgot you have a package.”

“Be right there.” Penelope called back. She threw the clothes in the machine, added soap and turned it on. Penelope went out to the kitchen and found Gram pointing to a package in the corner of the table.

“It was the strangest thing,” Gram said, “it was just on the porch when I woke up this morning. It must have been delivered by one of those fancy private delivery services because I didn’t see any postmark on it.”

Penelope smiled and thought of Riley immediately. She hoped he didn’t do anything too extravagant again. She grabbed the box and got a knife to pry the tape off. She didn’t even glance over the outside of it as she opened it excitedly. She opened the box and pulled out a book. She flipped open the cover, wondering what surprise the book held. The sight of the first page she felt her blood turn cold.

“What is it dear?” Gram asked her.

“It’s some recipes for work.” Penelope lied as she stuffed the book back into the box. “I, uh, ordered them online. I’m just going to take this to my room quickly if Riley or Emily looks for me. I’ll be right back.”

Penelope took the box upstairs and examined the outside more carefully. She didn’t see any kind of postmark or shipping label like Gram had said. She came to the conclusion that the package had to be hand delivered. She removed the book and took a deep breath as she opened the front cover again. The book was no ordinary book. It was a photo album dedicated to her. It was extremely disturbing because the first picture was of her in her room sleeping. Someone had been in her room with her—without her knowledge.

Penelope forced herself to turn through the pages. She found more and more photos of her going through her day—her with Riley, her and Emily, her with Gram—all pictures taken without any of their knowledge. It was alarming and made Penelope close the shades in her bedroom, scared that the photographer might still be looking in.
